Importing a model with not-humanoid (generic) animations

This folio contains guidance on importing a model for utilise with Unity's Animation System. For information on creating a model for use with the Blitheness System, see Creating models for blitheness.

The Blitheness Organization works with two types of models:

  • A Humanoid model is a specific structure, containing at least 15 basic organized in a style that loosely conforms to an actual human skeleton. For information on importing this type of model, see Importing a model with humanoid animations.
  • A Generic model is everything else. This might be annihilation from a teakettle to a dragon. This folio contains guidance on importing this type of model.

For general importing guidance that is applicative to all types of models, see Importing a model.

Overview

When Unity imports a Generic model, you must tell it which bone is the Root node A transform in an animation hierarchy that allows Unity to institute consistency between Animation clips for a generic model. It also enables Unity to properly blend betwixt Animations that accept not been authored "in place" (that is, where the whole Model moves its world position while animating). More info
See in Glossary
. This effectively defines the model's center of mass Represents the average position of all mass in a Rigidbody for the purposes of physics calculations. Past default it is computed from all colliders belonging to the Rigidbody, but tin be modified via script. More info

.

Since at that place is only one bone to map, Generic setups do non use the Humanoid Avatar window. As a outcome, preparing to import your non-Humanoid model file A file containing a 3D data, which may include definitions for meshes, bones, animation, materials and textures. More info

into Unity requires fewer steps than for Humanoid models.

  1. Set upward your Rig as Generic.
  2. You lot can optionally limit the animation that gets imported on certain bones past defining an Avatar Mask.
  3. From the Animation tab, enable the Import Animation option and then set the other Asset-specific properties, .
  4. If the file consists of multiple animations or actions, you tin define specific frame ranges every bit Animation Clips.
  5. For each Animation Clip Blitheness data that tin be used for animated characters or unproblematic animations. It is a unproblematic "unit" slice of motion, such equally (1 specific instance of) "Idle", "Walk" or "Run". More info
    See in Glossary
defined in the file, you tin:
    • Ready the pose and root transform
    • Optimize looping
    • Add curves to the clip in order to animate the timings of other items
    • Add events to the prune in order to trigger sure deportment in time with the animation
    • Discard function of the animation similar to using a runtime Avatar Mask but practical at import time
    • Select a different Root Motion Node to drive the action from
    • Read whatever letters from Unity about importing the clip
    • Watch a preview of the animation prune
  6. To relieve your changes, click the Apply push button at the bottom of the Import Settings window or Revert to discard your changes.

(blitheness) type to Generic. By default, the Avatar Definition holding is fix to Create From This Model and the Root node option is fix to None.

In some cases, you lot tin can change the Avatar Definition option to Copy From Other Avatar to use an Avatar you already defined for some other Model file. For example, if you create a Mesh The main graphics primitive of Unity. Meshes make up a large part of your 3D worlds. Unity supports triangulated or Quadrangulated polygon meshes. (skin) in your 3D modeling application with several distinct animations, you lot can export the Mesh to ane FBX file, and each animation to its ain FBX file. When yous import these files into Unity, you lot only need to create a single Avatar for the offset file you lot import (usually the Mesh). As long as all the files use the same bone structure, you lot tin can re-utilise that Avatar for the residue of the files (for instance, all the animations).

If you keep the Create From This Model choice, you must and so cull a bone from the Root node property.

If you decide to change the Avatar Definition pick to Copy From Other Avatar, you need to specify which Avatar you desire to apply by setting the Source property.

You can also change the maximum number of bones that tin influence a given vertex with the Peel Weights property. Past default, this property limits influence to four basic, but you can specify more or fewer.

When you click the Apply push, Unity creates a Generic Avatar and adds an Avatar sub-Asset under the Model Nugget, which yous can find in the Project view.

Note: The Generic Avatar is not the same thing every bit the Humanoid Avatar, but it does appear in the Project view, and it does hold the Root node mapping. Still, if yous click on the Avatar icon in the Project view to brandish its backdrop in the Inspector A Unity window that displays information about the currently selected GameObject, asset or project settings, allowing you to inspect and edit the values. Creating an Avatar Mask

You can apply masking to animation clips either during import time, or at runtime. Masking during import time is preferable, because it allows the discarded animation information to exist omitted from your build, making the files smaller and therefore using less memory. Information technology also makes for faster processing considering there is less animation information to be blended at runtime. In some cases, import masking may non exist suitable for your purposes. In that example, you can apply a mask at runtime by creating an Avatar Mask A specification for which body parts to include or exclude for an animation rig. Used in Animation Layers and in the importer. More info
See in Glossary
Asset, and using information technology in the layer settings of your Animator Controller Controls animation through Blitheness Layers with Animation Country Machines and Animation Blend Copse, controlled by Animation Parameters. The same Animator Controller tin can be referenced by multiple models with Animator components. More info

.

To create an empty Avatar Mask Nugget, you can either:

  • Choose Create > Avatar Mask from the Assets Whatever media or data that can be used in your game or project. An asset may come up from a file created outside of Unity, such as a 3D Model, an sound file or an image. You can also create some asset types in Unity, such equally an Animator Controller, an Audio Mixer or a Render Texture. More info
    Come across in Glossary
    menu.
  • Click the Model object yous want to define the mask on in the Project In Unity, you lot use a project to design and develop a game. A projection stores all of the files that are related to a game, such as the asset and Scene files. More info
    See in Glossary
view, and and then correct-click and cull Create > Avatar Mask.

The new Asset appears in the Projection view:

You tin can now choose which bones to include or exclude from a Transform hierarchy and so add the mask to either an Blitheness LayerAn Animation Layer contains an Blitheness Land Machine that controls animations of a model or part of it. An example of this is if you have a full-torso layer for walking or jumping and a higher layer for upper-body motions such as throwing an object or shooting. The higher layers take precedence for the torso parts they control. More than info
