Does the job, albeit a little slowly with a cordless drill and it used the whole of a power-pack. A new blade would cost £23 so this is a gamble worth taking to see if you can sharpen your blade. Mine was heavily gnarled and pitted but the sharpener coped admirably. I'll try it on my garden tools next.

I've used it on two mower's blades then did all of our spades, edging tools, secateurs, tree pruners and shears. All now pretty darned sharp and still loads of wheel to do them all next year and probably the year after. Given extra star as a result.

I didn't and only found out when I came to use this that it won't work on my mower with blades in situ as the "bevel" is on the lower edge. I specifically chose this tool thinking I could keep my blade sharp quickly and easily without removing it. I have a grinder but don't have a sturdy bench to clamp it to so always sharpen by hand which means removing the blade. Its not a big deal but I'm cross with myself for buying in a rush because the idea seemed great. Can't comment on the performance as it's easier to keep using the whetstone until I get a work bench. It shouldn't be sold as being able to sharpen whilst blade is on mower without having a note about different blades. Even the instructions inside show a blade with a bevel on the lower/ edge being sharpened in situ which isn't actually possible.

Removing the four blades from my front deck Stiga mower can be a real pain - the bolts tend to seize under a layer of mud and grime - so between blade changes when the deck is away for servicing I needed a method of quickly honing out any damage and putting the edge back on the blades. Having used a variety of files with mixed success, I spotted this little device.

When I first opened it, I must admit that it didn't inspire me with a plastic back guide that looked as if it would be chopped to bits on first use - but connect it to a drill (power is better, but battery will suffice given time) this actually does a pretty good job of putting a decent cutting edge back on the blade, without needing to remove it. Not that you'll see much of what it does as it's around the back, but you will notice that the quality of the cut is improved following use. As others have said, check the security of the screw that holds the grindstone at regular intervals - it can and will work loose - and make sure your hands and eyes are protected during use.

Well worth a punt at the current price in my view.

Have used it to sharpen various blades but mostly for the lawn mower.

Every year I sharpen the cutting blades as they get dented by stones and other debris. Fit it in an electric hand drill clamped to a work bench worked well, allowed me to use both hands to hold the blade. Recommend using leather gloves and eye protection when handling the mower blade and this grinder, even though the blades are typically not very sharp it could twist in your hand.

Make sure the screw at the top is tight as it will work loose over time.

I bought this to sharpen the blade on a new sickle I'd bought. Because a sickle has it's blade on the inside of a curve most sharpening tools are no good. This one does work, however, I did not find it particularly easy. I think the problem was really down to the blade - it had a coating all over it, presumably to protect it from rust. The issues are, that this tends to clog the sharpening stone side and on the flat side the friction between the plastic disk of the device and the back of the blade made the tool hard to move smoothly along the length of the blade. In the end it did do the job and prepared the tool ready for use but I'm not sure there's much life left in it. To maintain the blade I've gone back to the old fashioned cigar-shaped stone and that works fine but I think that would have struggled with the coating too.

My Bosch Lawnmower has been snatching the grass out of the lawn. A combination of dry weather and what I now know were VERY blunt blades.

This works a dream. Took me about 5-10 minutes to sharpen my lawnmower blades, spade, edging tool, and a knife I use in the garden. The edge is quite basic, not something for kitchen knives, but it very quickly put a nice new edge on my mower, taking the edge past a few chips and scrapes. The sharpness was definitely evident and it will cut your skin, but I wouldn't put it as razor sharp. I went over it again with a whetstone to add some fineness, but not sure if it was needed.

Either way, when I cut my lawn next I was definitely surprised at the different made. The mower was much quieter and didn't struggle with long clumps. Also the stripes put in have lasted a few days now, something that wasn't happening before. Most importantly, the grass has clearly been cut rather than snatched, and the blade is nice and sharp still.

My edging tool also gave good results, with much more of a slicing sound when used, and needing alot less foot pressure to dig in.

All in all really happy with this as it sets the angle for you.

What the amazon description fails to mention is that it isn't suitable for a cordless drill. I have a very decent new Bosch cordless, however it's just not powerful enough for this tool. It kept 'sticking' and just didn't sharpen when used as directed to create the bevel edge. Needs a powerful corded drill.

The only way I got it to work was by just using the edge of the stone as a grinder, rather than fitting the blade in the shaped part at the back. waste of money because I could have used any old grinding stone for this.

for the money its ok. suggest using loctite on thread of bolt which it stops it from unscrewing, also only suitable for light tasks, like mower blades or knives that do not need a lot of pressure. would be no good for say carbon steel, the wheel is not abrasive enough used for light tasks within its capability ok.
